Rimadyl is a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) used by veterinarians to treat dogs suffering inflammation and pain associated with hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis. It is also prescribed to relieve post-operative pain after orthopedic surgery.
Rimadyl should not be given to animals that are allergic to any of the drug's components. To avoid the development of gastrointestinal ulcers, Rimadyl must not to be used in conjunction with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Avoid using Rimadyl if the dog suffers with stomach ulcers or Von Willebrand's disease. Rimadyl should not be prescribed for dogs with heart disease, dehydration, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), kidney or liver disorders, or pregnant or lactating bitches. It should not be administered to dogs using diuretics. Rimadyl is not to be administered to cats.
Side-effects of Rimadyl include loss of appetite, diarrhea, dark stools, vomiting, an increase in urination and thirst, co-ordination problems, seizures, lethargy and behavioral problems. Rimadyl may also cause renal, neurological and dermatological problems. Hives, rashes and swelling are usually signs of an allergic reaction to the drug.
Rimadyl is available in chewable caplets of 25mg, 75mg and 100mg. The recommended dosage is 1mg per pound of the dog's weight, administered every 12 hours.
